2017 Day 31: How to Find God’s Calling

“God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” (1 Corinthians 1:9)

Trying to find God’s calling for your life can be a challenge. For myself, I wasn’t the type of person who always knew where I was going and what I was supposed to do for a living. After changing my major four times, I eventually transferred to a Bible college to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Biblical Studies. I thought maybe God was calling me to be the first Asian Greg Laurie or Billy Graham. Even after graduating, I was already 26 years old but still had no idea what God was calling me to do.

Being short on money, my brother let me crash at his condo while I tried to figure things out. During one of my devotionals, I read 1 Corinthians 1:9, which suddenly spoke to me. Although I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing career-wise, I knew that God was first calling me into fellowship with His son Jesus Christ. I took advantage of the free time and decided to pray and read the Bible as much as I could.  In the morning, I would read through the Old Testament, and after lunch I would read the New Testament. It was such a rich time being in the Word throughout the day. I loved reading stories of how God provided. I knew that one day just like how Jesus miraculously fed the 5,000, He would provide for my life.

One day, I was watching television, and I saw a commercial about a computer networking school. I felt a strong leading to call them and find out more. After seeking God, I decided to enroll, which was the beginning of an awesome journey into my career as a computer consultant. Fast-forward 15 years later, I am the CEO and president of my own IT consulting company—Numa Networks in Orange County. Sometimes I can’t believe I actually own a company and have employees, but every day I am reminded of how much God wants me right where I am. Our clients are happy, my employees love working here, and we are growing at incredible speeds. It seems we are constantly hiring. Only God could have orchestrated this outcome, but it took time for me to hear His voice, to hear His calling.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Have you found it challenging to know God’s calling for your life?
  2. What is our primary calling as followers of Christ? Reflect on 1 Corinthians 1:9.
  3. Do you trust God and in his timing?
