Day 9: In Search of Dreams

25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.

27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

29 “Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. (Matthew 14: 25-32)

Each of Jesus’s apostles had a different personality and style. Peter was an outspoken and impulsive person. When he recognized Jesus’ voice in the
darkness, he very much desired to walk on the water just like Him. Interestingly, Jesus granted his request right away. However, Peter sank with fear the minute he saw the strong wind and the big waves. And he was told by Jesus that he had too little faith.

Having studied the above verses, I’ve realized that Jesus actually allows and supports us in pursuing our own dreams based on our own character and temperament. My unique self, including the unique desires in my heart, are all parts of His creation. There is no need for us to put our dreams on hold for the sake of seeking the Lord’s ‘special guidance.’ What is important in the course of pursuing our dreams is that we entrust them all to Jesus. We should walk the entire journey with faith so that we can glorify Him with what we have done.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Do you have any dreams for your life? Have you ever asked the Lord to help you fulfill your dreams?
  2. Do you have fears or have you faced any obstacles as you’ve pursued your dreams?
  3. Pray that Lord would help you see your own uniqueness that He created, so that you can serve Him with all that you are.
